How to Build Executive Presence: Command a Room Without Saying a Word
Have you ever noticed how some leaders enter a room and the energy immediately shifts? It isn’t necessarily because they are the loudest person or the one with the highest title. It’s because they possess Executive Presence (EP).
For many, EP feels like an invisible “X-factor”—something you either have or you don’t. But at Cream of the Crop Leaders, we’ve proven that executive presence isn’t a personality trait; it’s a set of intentional behaviors that can be mastered through our “Learn By Doing™ methodology.
What is Executive Presence, Really?
According to common parlance and some research, EP is comprised of three pillars:
- Gravitas: How you anchor yourself.
- Communication: How you deliver your message and how you listen.
- Appearance: How you present yourself (the “Look of a Leader”).
While most training focuses on what to say, the most powerful leaders understand that the majority of their influence happens before they even open their mouths.
How to Build Executive Presence + The Power of the “Silent Command”
To command a room, you must first know how to anchor yourself. High-stakes environments or times that we are the center of attention often trigger a “fight or flight” response. For most of us, this leads to rapid speech, fidgeting, disjointed messaging and/or a closed-off posture. Further, some people ‘shrink’ their power; others try to mitigate their anxiety by trying to amplify their power. We don’t believe that either work. In our EP workshops (which are 90% interactive, Learn By Doing™) participants practice our 12 simple yet powerful tools to anchor into his or her authentic power. A few of our participants noted that these were helpful:
- The Power of the Pause: Most leaders rush to fill the silence. A leader with presence uses silence to invite others in or to emphasize a point. Next time you are asked a difficult question, pause before answering. This signals composure, deep thought, confidence – and allows you time to relax into your authentic power. A senior leader participant attending our Detroit area EP workshop raised her credibility enormously after slowing her rate of speech.
- Open Physicality: Avoid “shielding” behaviors (crossing arms or hiding hands). Open gestures signal transparency and confidence, which builds immediate trust with your audience. Often, we provide video feedback; many of our participants have commented on how surprised to see the ways in which they would close their body off or illustrate lack of confidence through other non-verbal cues.
- The Eye-Contact Equilibrium: Don’t just scan the room. Lock eyes with one person for a full thought before moving to the next. This creates a series of 1-on-1 connections, even in a room of fifty people. One of our San Francisco Bay Area participants was encouraged to maintain longer eye contact; he quickly saw how much more confident this led him to both appear and feel.
Why “Reading” About Leadership Isn’t Enough
You can’t learn to ride a bike by reading a manual, and you can’t build presence by watching a webinar. This is where many leadership programs fail.
Our philosophy includes active implementation. To truly shift how you are perceived, you need to practice these shifts in low-stakes environments until they become your “default” setting. Whether it’s through our EP workshop (called The Transformational Leadership Experience, available both onsite and virtually) or through our Gold Standard Leadership Program, you’ll apply our tools to a real scenarios in which you want to get buy-in from a key stakeholder. Then, you’ll get feedback from both our facilitator and the other participants.
Ready to Command the Room?
Executive presence is the bridge between being a “manager” and being a “leader.” If you’re ready to stop blending into the background and start leading with authority, let’s talk about our Transformational Programs.
