Transformational Leadership Defined

Question: How is transformational leadership defined?

Answer: Transformational leadership is a leadership style borne from a transformational mindset. A leader’s actions are crucial. But when defining transformational leadership, a leader’s actions are secondary; this is because actions arise from mindset.

Transformational leaders:

  1. Invest time and energy in their own
  2. Take healthy risks: Transformational leaders step outside their comfort zones to learn new ways of being and new ways of thinking. After all, if leaders don’t take risks, they’re not learning, and they’re certainly not transformational. After all, ‘comfort zone’ refers to the place of the known. To discover the unknown, a leader must step outside his or her comfort zone.
  3. Invite transformation in those they lead; this invitation arises from their own commitment to transformation and their resulting transformational leadership
  4. Are unstoppable: Guided by possibility, transformational leaders are less flummoxed by perceived limitations.
  5. Are a key part of your company’s Brain Trust – even if they sit on a low rung of your company ladder. Value them. They, in turn, can inspire others.
  6. Inspire others, even without trying: When we’re in the presence of a transformational human being, we sense an aliveness, a spark, a freshness of being and thinking; own vitality awakens.

Transformational leadership defined as anything else than a leadership style which arises from inside-out growth misses the point. Transformational leadership first and foremost describes the mindset of a transformational leader.
