Our organization began by sending our executive team through The Executive Presence Training with Cream of the Crop Leaders. Most people expected “training” in the traditional sense of learning new information. But that’s not really what this is.
Working with Cream of the Crop Leaders is a learning experience. It encourages and challenges participants to get in touch with their potential as leaders and seek to fulfill on that potential. As a result, each of us in the leadership team saw one another become larger and more powerful versions of ourselves. That was an exciting thing to see. As you see others become more powerful and influential, it becomes like a virtuous cycle, and you find yourself investing more of yourself in the program as well. In addition, the executive team bonded very strongly by virtue of the weekend together. Subsequent to that, we decided to enroll the next level of leadership and ultimately keep moving the entire company through the training. [How would you rate the professionalism of the people conducting the training?]
Extremely professional. Class act. Prior to joining my current company, I was a VP and SVP of a $2B publishing company and have been through many executive and leadership training programs during my career. This was by far the best. Sioux is able to challenge people to be transformational leaders, to make themselves vulnerable and open to change, and to bring that back to their organizations — and yet they are very capable and able to keep it down to Earth.
[What was the best thing about the training?]
On a group level, the virtuous cycle I referred to was an amazing thing to experience. I literally watched people transform in front of me, to find their most powerful versions of themselves, and share that with others. On a personal level, I took away a new understanding of power. I realized that in my entire life I have viewed power in interpersonal relationships as a zero-sum game — that is to say, if one person has more power in the interaction, then the other has less. As a result, I often found that in order to help others feel more powerful I would compromise or reduce my own power in the interaction. What I discovered is that power is not a zero-sum game. This is not something the facilitators explicitly said or communicated. It just became obvious. And I realized that I could project immense power in front of another individual, a group, or even a large audience, and yet it did not have to be intimidating or overbearing, that the power I projected could in fact help amplify the power of the others as well. I have brought this back to my everyday work where it helps me amplify the impact of my entire team.
[What do you think was the impact of this training within your team?]
Let me give you a specific example: One of my Delivery Leaders (akin to a project manager) has looked for ways to expand her repertoire and become a stronger leader with more responsibility. She expressed a lot of interest in learning and acquiring the skills to take a bigger role, including learning some executive consulting skills, project management skills, etc. She was looking for things she could learn to do. Through the Executive Presence Training, I saw her pivot away from learning more impactful things to do and toward learning more impactful ways to be. For her, it wasn’t about learning a technique or method to apply. But rather, it was about learning how to get in touch with how much she cares about the success of her clients, and to bring that depth of care to her interactions with them. They see it. They feel it. And they respond to it. And it has resulted in the transformation of that particular client from a single project client into a multi-million dollar, multi-project account. And it has resulted in the transformation of that employee from a manager of a project into a leader running an account.
